Browser Giants Debate the Future of the Web
Perhaps the most interesting panel I attended at SXSW (and the one that was the most over my head) was the panel on browser wars, moderated by Arun Ranganathan of AOL. The all-star panelists were Charles McCathieNevile, Chief Standards Officer for Opera; Brendan Eich, CTO of Mozilla; and Chris Wilson, IE Platform Architect at Microsoft, who's been working on Internet Explorer since the IE2 days. The interesting thing was that the room wasn't nearly full. Any panel with "video" in the title was standing-room only--heck, I went to a "Future of Online Magazines" panel that was filled beyond capacity--but a discussion with reps from three of the four main browsers wasn't compelling enough to fill even a smaller room? Maybe 10 A.M. is too early for such panels. Anyway, it was a fascinating conversation, and I'm in way over my head so I'll keep my own thoughts to a minimum and let the panelists speak for themselves. And if it's too inside baseball, I apologize--I'm cutting it down to the parts that interested me. The moderator opened the panel with a brief timeline that began in 1996 to 2002, the era he referred to as "The Talking Smack Era." The period was marked by lots of discussion about standards versus proprietary formats, and how much a good browser is worth in the monetary sense. And lots of talking smack.
